So far I have just skimmed, but I see the intense level of work that has gone into this endeavor. The Pain and Frustration is apparent and I must say that I admire your ability to put your feelings and experiences into such erudite words. I will explore further when I have time (after our Festival at church is concluded) . I commend you on a tremendous effort. Your voice speaks for the thousands who have gone through the same roadblocks. I wish you success in all endeavors. You are an exceptional and capable lady who just needs a chance………………….
I think this website is great. Tells it like it is for women!!! who are serious about working and the stuff they see and go through in the work environment. ROCK ON!!!!
Appreciate this site. Thats all I can say. You most definitely make this blog into something special. You clearly understand what you are doing, youve covered a lot of corners.help you
What an amazing piece of content. Never thought of it that way. You always come up withkiller articles. Your web site literally keeps me entertained for hours lol. Love your stuff, don’t ever stop.
I’m middle aged female , need to work to support myself. Just hit my last week of UI.
Heres some experience in work environments I’ve had.
Recently went to interview largely european male dominated [here in US- surprise??]. Greek company. I was in the middle of the interview , a former coworker of mine was working there and part of the interview process. He was saying VERY nice things about how good I was at my job where I used to work with him. In walks the Director of Human Resource, starts harrassing me and trying to intimidate me. Saying he had met me before at a job fair. Here’s the truth of the situation. I had emailed him ONCE over a planners job he hadn’t hired me for. That is the only contract. I NEVER met him in my life before that day YET he insisted that I had. Then when they contacted me over this in person interview they told me that they didn’t think I was focused because I didn’t remember meeting him. BUT I HAD NEVER MET HIM BEFORE. Don’t buy Chobani Yogurt, no matter how good it is!! They hired this egotistical, abusive , thing.
Heres another in two separate in,terviews also recently. Comments made , number 1 by a young man” well I’m not that anxious to put training into a person whose going to retire soon”, and number 2 by a 40 something female,”well right now I’m the oldest person working here”. THINK THERE’S ALITTLE BIT OF AGE DISCRIMINATION THERE.
I worked for the same employer till 2001, as a procurement specialist in a technical environment. I was very good a sourcing contractors, suppliers, working technical specifications. After 10 years of doing an EXCELLENT job in this capacity, they hired 2 not 1 man to work with me and my supervisor called me down the hall to tell me” we expect you to teach Al [one of the 2 men], everything you know about this job. And that he wouldn’t be one to discriminate against women doing any kind of job, but unfortunately for me there were alot of men in the environment that would rather talk to a MAN about this stuff “. At the point this was said to me, I had already been the major person in that environment doing that job for TEN YEARS. CAN WE SAY DISCRIMINATION BOYS AND GIRLS. And worse YET was that this company is a WORLDWIDE company that touts themselves as being liberal and SO AGAINST DISCRIMINATION OF ANY KIND. I was let go from my job at this place over hearsay, from one man. This is illegal in itself. They were told that by the New York State Administrative Law Judge, when I had a hearing for my UI. They couldn’t hold my UI, because by firing me over hearsay, they had BROKEN THE LAW. And the judge told them that. They got away with it though. Don’t buy deskpad calendars, PLEASE.
I have been through discriminatory job practices like what has happened to you. I like this blog, it really tells the truth about what happens to women in the work place. I mean it tells the truth about what happens to women who go into the workplace to REALLY work and not sleep with the boss, suckup or other sleezy female coworker passtimes. Yes I have seen both sides of it. Male bosses that sucked and female one’s who got ahead because they did.
I lost the last job that supported me 2 years & over 9 months ago. I’m 61. My unemployment ran out in June of last year. I’ve lost my apartment and am living on General Relief & food staps. After a decade of working as a technical writer for a lot of money, I’m reduced to filling out applications for jobs such as sign twirlers (and not getting any response). Last week I filled out apps at McDonalds (online). Like you, I was given a long website requiring hours of filling out information, as though I was going for a job at the FBI. I had to fill out a couple of those insanely long question and answer things, where they ask you the same questions over & over, in different ways, also. UGH! Now I know why some people have actually given up on the job search. You could die of boredom or old age going through that nonsense (if you weren’t made insane first). I’m stunned by the fact that there are a few jobs open but they pay a fraction of what they used to pay, like anyone’s supposed to be able to support themselves on almost nothing. My rent goes up, the cost of living goes up, but I’m applying for jobs that pay a tiny fraction of what I’m used to earning. This ought to discourage any foreigners from coming to America to get their share of “the American dream.” That’s a fairy tale from long ago. Nowadays the only dream is keeping from being homeless and starving.
And I thought my experience was bad! Being 60 yrs old and “released” after 32+ years at the same Firm – being replaced by overseas employees who wanted to make an entry into America! I felt humilated and distraught – but I got extremely lucky and landed a job at a start up financial software Firm. Less pay, but much better working environment.
My advise to everyone who experiences these life altering events is to stay in touch with “friends” and “relatives” and former colleagues – reach out to them. Use whatever eletronic media necessary to make yourself known to the industries (LinkedIn, Facebook, whatever) – you never know what people are looking for.
It’s unfortunate – but today’s generation only communicate electronically – there is no personal interaction any longer – and that is a sad sad thing!
Plus – Never go through this alone! Thankfully, I had my wife supporting me through the process!
This is really interesting, You are a very skilled blogger. I have joined your feed and look forward to seeking more of your magnificent post. Also, I’ve shared your website in my social networks!
I like this website very much, Its a real nice situation to read and find info . “One man’s religion is another man’s belly laugh.” by Robert Anson Heinlein.
I know that you haven’t updated this blog in a while, but did you ever get employment? I’m on the younger side, but unfortunately, your stories of your interview woes are still very prominent when I’m out job hunting. Also, your writing is very delightful.
